Discover Athens’ beautiful beaches and sunset

Poseidon Temple in Sounio, Athens, Greece.

Thinking of visiting Athens? One of the world’s most vibrant and historical cities, Athens will not disappoint keen travelers looking for an enviable destination. With an ancient site to admire around every corner, mouth-watering Greek cuisine and a lively nightlife, you’re bound to have a great time!

But, if you want a taste of the Greek island experience where you can enjoy breathtaking beaches and sunsets without leaving the capital, we’ve got you covered! Below are top spots you can check out without breaking the bank.

How to get there?

We suggest you drive to the south from Athens where you’ll get stunning endless views of the Aegean and get the chance to experience a fun drive on windy roads with plenty of spots to take some amazing photos. So, rent a car and start your adventure!

Tip: Remember to take the EO91 beach road and not Attiki Odos (highway) and make sure you have your driving license and passport in order to rent a car.

To swim or not to swim?

It depends what time of year you decide to go for a visit as during the cooler months you might not be able to go for a swim. Luckily, it shouldn’t be too cold any time between mid-May and mid-September. So, make sure you pack your beach essentials!

First stop – let’s go!

Drive towards Glifada, the first of the many beachside suburbs of Greece. Here, check out Vouliagmeni where you can go for a quick swim or just chill by the beach. If you really want to blend in, get yourself a pair of wooden tennis rackets and join the rest of the locals playing the summer national sport. Also, you have the option to go to the beach maintained by the Tourism Organization (EOT) (there’s a small admission fee) or you can enjoy the public beaches.

Tip: Grab a coffee on the go! You have to try the Frappe (cold instant coffee with foam at the top) or Freddo. It’s a must!

Second stop

Spend an hour or two at the beach and then drive towards Varkiza. The drive between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza is interesting, not to mention challenging as well with a few tricky corners. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Make sure you stop somewhere along the way to take some stellar photos of the Mediterranean!

Tip: Make a pit stop at Georgiadis bakery. You’ll probably want to try everything in there, but we recommend some traditional Greek pies (cheese pie, spinach pie, etc…) and of course one more coffee.

Third stop

Continue your drive towards Sounio and stop at Anavissos and go for a quick swim. Here, there are many public beaches, beach bars and beaches with admission you can explore. Take your pick, you can’t go wrong really.

To fuel up head out to Palaia Fokaia, a little town by the sea that has amazing fish taverns. You will spot them, they are right on the road and their friendly waiters will lure you in! Try mouth-watering fresh fish, calamari, octopus or delicious pasta with lobster or shrimps.

Last stop

With your tummy filled, you’re now good to go. Head out to Sounio and make sure you are in time for the sunset where you can unwind, relax and enjoy the magnificent views of one of the best beach sunsets in the world.

Tip: If you’re interested in history, arrive a bit earlier and visit the temple of Poseidon (the God of the oceans). It’s really worth it.

On your way back, we recommend going to either Vouliagmeni or Glifada, where you can grab a refreshment and do some people watching. And, if you aren’t tired why not party. Glifada has great nightlife and good crowd!

This will definitely be a day to remember, you can thank us later!
